REVIEW: Mykorrhiza - Shattered Dreams Konqueror Records, 2003
7.5/10
Mykorrhiza - Shattered Dreams - cover art Last year I was pretty impressed by the first self-titled EP release from this new Swedish death metal act that features the former Excruciate band leader Henrik Brynolfsson. Their debut album is also released on the small Singapore based label Konqueror Records and continues where the mini album left off. That means nine new songs of atmospheric death metal with doom and heavy metal influences. Mykorrhiza still sounds a little similar to newer Necrophobic but I think this young band is more diverse. It is not very often that I refer to death metal as being beautiful and emotional but those words definitely come to mind when you hear what Brynolfsson has managed to do once again. Anders Strokirk from Blackshine handles the vocals on this release as well and he is yet again doing a great job. The album also features guest appearances from Brynolfsson's old bandmate from Excruciate, Lars Levin, and the producer Tor Adolfsson who both contribute with backing vocals. David Brink from the failed reunion line-up of Excruciate is the man behind the album cover, making this release somewhat of a family affair. If you're a fan of atmospheric death metal then I suggest you give Mykorrhiza a chance.
