REVIEW: Mystic Prophecy - Regressus Nuclear Blast, 2003
10/10
Mystic Prophecy - Regressus - cover art Even though in the meanwhile I have heard hundreds of albums in that particular type of music, the last album of classic / epic Heavy Metal that impressed me no end was “Vengeance” by Mystic Prophecy, which was released back in 2001. Therefore I was very anxious to listen to their new one and find out if they could be capable to come up with something as good as the debut. It did not take long for me to realize that they have actually managed to surpass the classic debut in every single department! To begin with, the production is loud and clear. The mix is fantastic and allows for all the instruments to be heard really clearly and in the exact right level. Dimitris Liapakis [also sings and composes for Valley’s Eve] is a great lyricist (this album is a concept to and it is the continuation of the concept subject that appeared in the first album and will continue in the next one), singer (great tough but melodic enough, manly vocals) and composer. He is also an amazing producer. With this production he is rightfully taking a place next to any one of the world-class producers that you can care to think of. I have seen in practise how loud this record is, because whenever I DJ songs from this record, I always have to remember to put the volume down, so that I don’t blow the speakers up. And it is exactly the quality of the recording that makes the punters come and ask to learn the name of the band and the name of the record. Initially they are getting very surprised by the power of the recording, but then, once they start noticing the actual quality of the songs, it is that quality that make them request to hear their songs again and again, every time that I DJ! Their songs are true Metal hymns and can excite even the biggest wimps and / or people that are not even into Metal. I have seen this happening with my own eyes in several occasions. Apart from the super tight playing of Martin Albrecht [bass, ex- Stormwitch and currently also with Valley’s Eve] and Dennis Ekdahl [also drummer with Raise Hell], it is the Greek guitarist Gus G. [also with Dream Evil, his own band Firewind, and in the Nightrage debut album] that steals the show with his overpowering and intense guitar playing, that has a full on metal feeling that is nothing less than amazing. The absolutely incredible thing is that he has also managed to incorporate Thrash and Death Metal riffs to his playing, but he does that in a manner that compliments the songs and even makes them more exciting and interesting to listen to. This innovative approach in his guitar playing makes MYSTIC PROPHECY stand well above any other band in the classic / epic Heavy Metal field. It is nice to hear a band that respects the Metal traditions, but instead of boring people, has something new and innovative to offer too. Thanks to my Djing, I have realized that this is one of the reasons why MYSTIC PROPHECY have already achieved to command respect and admiration, even from people who are not only (or are not at all) into the classic / epic Heavy Metal sound. If you financial status only allows you to buy 2 or 3 albums this year, then make sure that you buy this one first.
