REVIEW: Nærvær - Skiftninger Prophecy Productions, 2001
6.5/10
Nærvær - Skiftninger - cover art Prophecy Productions have always been very good at signing weird but very interesting bands, ranging from raw black metal to ambient folk and shamanistic music. Just like so many of their other signings the Norwegian band Nærvær can't be put in any musical box. I wouldn't go as far as calling this album a metal release though because most of the songs are soft and atmospheric with plenty of accoustic guitars, some more, some less interesting. The overall atmosphere is very sad and melancholic - think of a rocky shore on a gray cloudy day with the waves softly caressing the rocks and you will get the picture of what to expect from these more than sixty minutes of music. What came as a surprise to me was that this band consists of no less than ten members and still they are able to sound so little... That is not a bad thing in this case though and Nærvær have created a very atmospheric album that will suit melancholic souls who don't mind a soft one. Kristiansand, where Nærvær is from, seems to be be inhabited by one of the most experimental music scenes in the world and since this band features a couple of former In The Woods members you probably realize that this is something out of the ordinary. It is not easy listening, that's one thing for sure. So don't be afraid if you hear harmonicas, pianos, marimbas, xylophones or a trumpet when listening to this. The cd actually contains sixteen tracks but the track listing below is the only one I have found...
