Umeå is a university city in the north
of Sweden and this is where bands like Meshuggah, Nocturnal Rites, Bewitched
and Naglfar hail from. It has now been four years since Naglfar released their
last album "Diabolical" but now they are finally back again to show the
world what quality black metal sounds like. I don't really know the reasons
for this long period of silence but the line-up is not exactly the same now as
it was in 1998. In the year 2000 the guitarist Morgan Hansson left the band
after seven years of service and in his place we can now find Marcus Norman
from Bewitched. This is only a mini album that is being released as a proof of
life or something like that, awaiting the full-length "Sheol" which should
be released later this year. "Ex Inferis" was actually released by Century
Media last year but now it is being unleashed by their new label New Hawen
Records (former WAR Music, former Wrong Again Records) as well. It includes
five tracks; two of them are new songs, two of them are taken from their 7"
picture EP "When Autumn Storms Come" and the fifth one (well, the second if
you count the order on the album...) is a cover of the Massacre classic "Dawn
Of Eternity" taken from their "From Beyond" album. Except for the Massacre
cover, which is a real killer, there are two other great tracks to hear namely
"When Autumn Storms Come" and the closing one called "The Brimstone Gate".
Naglfar perform high quality black art and nothing but it. This is violent
black metal but is very melodic, atmospheric and shows a modern touch that
reminds me a little of the latest release from Dark Funeral. If you are into
Swedish black metal then Naglfar is a name you should remember. Now let's
wait and see what "Sheol" has to offer. Old fans of the band will not be
disappointed.
