Naglfar are considered as one of black metal´s most fierce troops, due to their uncompromising attitude when it comes to their vision. I was somewhat disappointed with “Pariah”, as it failed to ignite the same relentless aggression that was embedded into “Sheol”, but with this new album, the band seems more determined to carry the Naglfar banner into new territories while retaining every ounce of their blackened brutality.
You will undoubtedly hear the same band when listening to “Harvest”, it´s not really the song writing that´s been upped, although the album has some new ideas with tempos and melody, but the sound layers on the instruments lend a heavier and thicker production, one might say that they´ve lured some of the early death metal slitherings from “Vittra” back.
Kristoffer Olivius, now solely fronting the band as new shrieker, doesn´t get the same brutality through his performance as Jens Ryden did. The vocals have always been an disturbing quality of this band but since “Pariah”, there´s been a change of focus. Still, Olivius´ vocals are pretty extreme and they do go better with the murkier black metal sounds of the album.
Faster tracks like “Breathe Through Me” and “Odium Generis Humani”, displays a faster approach with double bass drumwork, almost like multiple detonations, and add a sense of urgency into the band´s attacks. As usual there are a couple of compositions that are slower in guitar picking but none less obscure, it´s all stamped with the Naglfar trademark. Some rather simple piano arrangements are fed into the closing pair of “Feeding Moloch” and the title cut. Though they may not be spectacular, they certainly generate the right mood and add a helpful contrast amidst the brutal maelstrom of serpentine riffing and thuderous drumming.
The band still ranks among the top extremists in this field. If not an overly exciting affair, “Harvest” is indeed a well produced album stuffed with assaulting blackened metal that will please most fans.
