I was never into black metal. I just didn't find it amusing enough. Until the 9th of June, this year.
That was the day I went to the CD-shop in town and saw a great-looking cover artwork belonging to Naglfars' latest effort, "Sheol" (made by Niklas Sundin. Dark Tranquillity anyone!?), and I decided to listen to it. 30 seconds later I stood there with the headphones pressing softly to my skull. And I was blown away immediately! "I Am Vengeance" was unleashed and had begun conquering my world. And after 30 more seconds I surrendered. I bought the record and took it home just to figure out that there was more than one song on this album. And the quality of the songs is above possible. Did I mention that "Sheol" is my all-time favorite record?
The songs are as catchy as black metal songs can be, and the lyrics are awesome! I don't really care what the meaning is, as long as it sounds good.
A quick check: What you get is 43:42 minutes of (very) high-class black metal delivered in a shredding tempo with just two tracks (of nine) to catch the breath on. Nice, neat and neck breaking as it should be! Worth all money you spend on it! Once again a Swedish band releases a well-produced album. To me it seems like everything coming out of the Scandinavian countries is good. And Naglfar is far from an exception. Let’s hope that they will continue and make us a worthy follow-up to "Sheol" which will forever have a very special place in my heart.
Doubtful if you would like it? Just listen to it yourself and I’m sure you will know what I talk about.
