REVIEW: Nagrim - Ecclesiophobia Self-financed, 2003
5/10
Nagrim - Ecclesiophobia - cover art This is as much black metal as you can get. Nagrim not only hail from Sweden but also from the very north of Sweden and a town called Kiruna. The band has been around since 2001 and the name is taken from an Icelandic word. This new demo of their's consist of four own compositions and four cover versions of well-known black / death metal bands. Their own songs are mostly mid-paced black metal with a raw and primitive production. Except for sound quality, which is not an absolute must in, they also lack any sense of originality and what is annoying is that the vocals sound awful most of the time. There are some nicer moments though as well, particularly the slower riffs where the guitars can be heard clearly for once. It seems like they are going for a Darkthrone meets Beherit atmosphere and to some extent they actually pull it off. Something that is absent here however is song writing abilities. You don't think that is necessary in black metal? Well, then you're wrong because without songs you have nothing but a chaotic mix of riffs and melodies with nothing holding them together. This is not exactly what we have here but Nagrim do need to improve in this particular area if they want their own songs to be given as much interest as their cover versions. Now on to the covers then. We have "Sadomatic Rites" by Beherit, "Troops Of Doom" by Sepultura, "Countess Bathory" by Venom and "Deathcrush" by Mayhem. All of these covers are decently well done but only "Sadomatic Rites" sounds good enough to be included as a cover version on an official release. There are many more promising black metal bands than Nagrim out there but if you're a hardcore fan of underground BM then you might still want to take a look at them.
