REVIEW: Napalm Death - From Enslavement To Obliteration Earache Records, 1988
7.5/10
Napalm Death - From Enslavement To Obliteration - cover art This LP is 150% insanely brutal grindcore in its finest form. Along with Napalm Death’s first LP “Scum”, “From Enslavement to Obliteration” positioned Napalm Death as the fastest most intense band ever. Back then (1987) not one band could match the ferocity of these 27 songs of insanity. “From Enslavement to Obliteration” has been mimicked and surpassed in speed since, but no one can argue that this is where grindcore developed into it’s manic barrage of noise. Other bands have managed to equal the intensity, but no one has surpassed Napalm Death in Integrity, musicianship, or brutality. To listen to these 27 songs today, you understand where extreme music got it’s influence; the songs have not lost a step. They are angry blasts that sound much like a sonic assault to everyone’s ears. Sound Pollution?? Maybe, but sound pollution in its finest form!! Bill Steer winds his way through the attacking drums with his guitar, while Lee Dorrian’s bear like growls are only matched by his mad iguana screeches. This is also Shane Embury’s first recording with the band, and has been the only remaining member to this very day. His bass is fucking heavy, as it rumbles through your floorboards. The biggest problem with F.E.T.O. is that while there are some classic songs, there are too many songs that sound the same. Originally F.E.T.O. was released with a free five song seven inch named “The Curse”, and also along with “Scum”. It has since been re-released as a 27 song LP with “The Curse” included, and is a mere 34 minutes in length. Once again the lyrics are very socially aware, something which Napalm Death has always managed to write. The production is a step better than “Scum”, but not as raw, I find at least. The music is still very punk, with furious metal riffs. This Napalm Death line-up can be argued, as it’s best that it’s seen through its long history. Every member has contributed to so many other great bands. Lee Dorian went on to form “Cathedral” a doom metal project that is a far cry from these early years of Napalm Death. Bill Steer was one of the main players in the gore-grind project known as “Carcass”, and is now part of “Firebird”. Both Bill and Lee left Napalm Death soon after F.E.T.O. Mick Harris stayed a while longer, but then left to form “Scorn”. He has also been apart of many other side project bands such as: Praxis, Painkiller, DEFECATION, Extreme Noise Terror, plus countless others. . .. . . The first song on this LP: “Evolved as One” slowly rolls through numbing the unsuspecting listener, before bombarding them with 25 tracks of unrelenting grind. It then ends with “The Curse”. Finally the listener gets a much-needed relief after the musical war that they have just been part of. Only to press play again another time. You’ll never win against Napalm Death, they are too powerful a band!! Classic’s are: “Unchallenged Hate”, “Lucid Fairytale”, “From Enslavement to Obliteration”, “Musclehead”, “Dead”, “Inconceivable?”, “Display to Me. . . “, “Evolved as One”, “Worlds Apart”, “Morbid Deceiver”, “The Curse”, and Cock-Rock Alienation.
