REVIEW: Napalm Death - Order Of The Leech FETO Records, 2002
9/10
Napalm Death - Order Of The Leech - cover art “Order of the Leech” from Napalm Death is their first release on FETO records, which is also a brand new record label created by the band. O.O.T.L. is also released fresh off the heels of the Official DVD Endorsed by the band “Punishment in Capitals”. With Order of the Leech, Napalm Death delivers another punishing 12 tracks of heavy grind. It’s in the same vein as Enemy of the Music Business, and it’s the logical step forward in the Napalm Death timeline. It’s not as angry as E.O.T.M.B., but has a more distressed feel to it. With all band members giving their all, and proving once again that they are all master’s of their respected craft. Barney’s screams are so intense this time around; they make the songs sound so much heavier. O.O.T.L. is released at a time when countries are at war within the world, and Napalm Death being Napalm Death has a point to share with everyone. To start things off is “Continuing War on Stupidity”, which attacks not only the current war, but also previous wars and the leading presidents of the time. A perfect beginning to this LP. Napalm Death doesn’t stop there as they roll through with “Out of Sight out of Mind” and “Forced to Fear” which starts off sounding like an air raid made by Jesse and Mitch’s guitars, no one is safe while listening to Napalm Death. Everyone might not agree with singer Barney Greenway’s very left-winged views, but no matter, he has a point to be heard. This point has been covered before, but Barney tells it like no other. Basically, with this album he’s saying get off your lazy ass, and do something with your life. Don’t let yourself be led, lead your own destiny. Don’t fall victim, use your voice. The Queen is also on the list from which Barney address’, with “To Lower Yourself (Blind Servitude)”. To Lower Yourself probably has one of the most intense endings that I have ever heard from a Napalm Death song or any other extreme band. Every instrument culminates along with Barney’s growls/screams to an unbelievable madness, which can only make you feel your head as it explodes into thousands of pieces of brain mass. Great shit!! My favorite song on Order of the Leech is “Per Capita”. It’s heavy as fuck. Barney’s vocals are another highlight with this track, as he mixes it up with some distortion. Sounds all fucked up, but very cool, I’m impressed indeed. This album is once again produced by Simon Efemey and Russ Russell and is on the same level as E.O.T.M.B., although it isn’t as angry. Order of the Leech defiantly continues the Napalm Death discography with great respectability. For a band which has been around as long as these guys, you’d think they’d be losing their ideas, and slowing it down. You’d never think that they’d still be writing metal history twenty years into their existence. Unlike Slayer, and Metallica who have only sold out and jumped onto the “What’s cool with the Kiddies these days” band wagon. Order of the Leech delivers another punch to the mainstream music industry, and is another victory for the underground scene. Best tracks are: “Per Capita”, “Continuing War on Stupidity”, “The icing on the Hate”, “Forced to Fear”, “To Lower Yourself (Blind Servitude)”, Blows to the Body”, and “The Great Capitulator”. Also check out the secret “joke” at the end of this LP. It’s a continuing joke of sorts, which started, on their EP “Leaders not Followers”. I’m not too sure what the point is with this extra “joke”, as it has had different forms on the Leaders . . . EP, and the Enemy of the Music Business LP. But it’s worth a listen, for some reason??
