REVIEW: Narnia - Desert Land Nuclear Blast, 2001
6.5/10
Narnia - Desert Land - cover art First of all I must say that I´m admired by the fact that Narnia managed to record an album clocking in at exactly one hour (at least according to my stereo). Well done! For those of you who don´t already know this band I can tell you that they are a melodic metal band from Sweden. Their music would perhaps best be described as Europower meets Joey Tempest. Especially the vocals are very reminiscent of the legendary Europe (also from Sweden...). There are some pretty good songs on this album like "Inner Sanctum" and "Walking The Wire" but the compositions tend to get a little boring at times, in particular the slower songs with tireing guitar solos instead of passion and emotions. Considering the fact that these guys are Christian believers you might expect them to have a positive and hopeful message to the world but instead the lyrics are almost as sad as the most misanthropic black metal band. The impression you get from the lyrical aspect of this album is rather resigned with lines about the computerized society and hopeless state of the world. This is no bashing of the band if you see it that way, just an interesting observation. Narnia has never been that appreciated by me and this third album does unfortunately not change my opinion about them but if you´re keen on guitar solos á la Yngwie Malmsteen, Europower á la Edguy and melodic metal á la Dio then be sure to check this out on the 12th of February. Strong vocals but not as strong music.
