REVIEW: Nasum - Helvete Relapse Records, 2003
6.5/10
Nasum - Helvete - cover art The fact that this Swedish band has been around for over a decade really makes me feel old. It seems like yesterday that they were being signed to Relapse, though this did happen almost 5 years into their existence, in the late 1990's. Little has changed in the Nasum camp over time; long-time members Anders Jakobson and Mieszko Talarczyk still form the grinding nucleus of the trio. True to their original plans of playing "straight-forward grindcore on the old Napalm Death tradition", Nasum plow through 22 tracks in about a half an hour, sliding powerchords furiously between syncopated blastbeats and shouts of socio-political angst. "Drop Dead" stood out as a strong number, as did the last bunch of tracks, including "Worst Case Scenario", where the riffing is given a chance to breathe and ring out. Simply stated, if grind is your taste, "Helvete" will give you a lethal dose of what you need.
