REVIEW: Neaera - Omnicide - Creation Unleashed Metal Blade, 2009
9/10
Neaera - Omnicide - Creation Unleashed - cover art I'm not sure if I ever heard the term Omnicide before, but the killing of all of the universe, seems a nice direction for a Death Metal record to go. A pleasant surprise here, not being aware of their earlier work, Neaera unleash a battery of mosh pit metal juxtaposed with fiery melodies. Death Metal done poorly is apt to get boring, but I love the songwriting here. Nothing's prototypical, at least arrangement wise, and the vocals are at times mesmerizing, atmospheric and moody, fierce and melodic, brutal and powerful. Neara blaze a trail in Death Metal sound and storytelling.

The production is awesome, rhythm is loud and clear, and at times they tend to steer towards the In Flames direction, but manage to pull it back soon enough, exploring context rather than straight up melody, song-focused rather than over emphasis on mechanisms of genre. These kids really got something here and I'd like to see how they pull it off live. Can they command a room, get everyone's attention, and pull you into their little netherworld like the album does? If they can, they may be destined for greatness.
