REVIEW: Nebel - Hymns Of Destruction Oaken Shield, 2002
4/10
Nebel - Hymns Of Destruction - cover art "Hymns Of Destruction" was recorded March 2002 in Andromeda Studios, France. It was the only release to be made by trio HDS, Ukjent and Chaosbutcher, because I now heard they split. Likely, this will not be noticed by anyone, except die-hard fans of French blackmetal (hopefully non-existent). Like all Frenchmen, HDS has a very strong accent, making it hard to hear the lyrics. "Hymns..." has the potential of being a good album, but has too clear production with much too loud drums. The riffs also could be a lot less boring. Sometimes you won't even notice the change of songs because some of them sound almost alike. By the name of the drummer (Ukjent) I can only imagine that they have been influenced alot by the norwegian scene, but made the mistake having clear production with alot of bass in it. I guess that's what makes this album sound boring. Minus also for album layout which must be one of the worst I've seen. Lyrics aren't included, and because of the French voice, I cannot figure all of them out, which makes it hard to pass any judgement. Best song number nine, "Light", has better riffs and more prominent guitar-play, making it sound more varied than the others. This is fast, dark but boring black metal.
