After seven years and three albums under the Hagalaz’ Runedance monicker, Andrea Haugen felt that it was time to move on. She didn't want to limit herself musically nor lyrically and therefore went back to her past when she used the alias Nebelhexë. The music on her new album is not entirely different from what she has done with Hagalaz' Runedance but it is, in my opinion at least, more diverse, alive and complex. It doesn't feel as sterile as some of her earlier music did, instead it sounds very organic and feels more true to her own spiritual ideas. The album opens up with "Totems" and the title track, two of her best songs ever. They are more guitar driven than usual thanks to the aid of Mindgrinder's Cosmocrator and the atmosphere is a little similar to that of fellow countryman Mortiis. Andrea executes the vocal parts beautifully well throughout the whole album and her hypnotic chanting has never been as efficient as now in creating the perfect pagan soundtrack. With Nebelhexë she has reached places she could apparently not go with Hagalaz' Runedance and "Laguz - Within The Lake" is the most complete and mature album from this skilled Norwegian artist. It should be mentioned here that the music is not everything. In the booklet you will find photos and paintings of her own aside from the lyrics which, as usual, will give you some insight into the world of Andrea Haugen and modern pagan spiritualism. The album also comes with a video of the track "Wake To Wither" and a cover of Lene Lovich's "Bird Song". Of her releases so far this is the one which will appeal the most to fans of 80s gothic music as well as metal. A masterpiece on its own and one of the brightest spots in the annual discography, if not THE brightest.
