REVIEW: Necrophagia - Harvest Ritual Volume I Red Stream, 2005
7/10
Necrophagia - Harvest Ritual Volume I - cover art Raw, gritty, full of groove and hate. Another chapter in Necrophagia's uneven history of horror metal madness. Admittedly, I've never had much interest in this band, having only heard a few scattered tracks (none of which caught my attention). Either I totally overlooked this band's greatness in the past, or they've really stepped up with "Harvest Ritual." Being a horror movie maniac myself makes me a bit biased as I can't help but smile at the intro of "Return to Texas." If you're a fan of the movie the song is in reference to, you'll recognize "the noise," let's just leave it at that. What I like about Necrophagia is they avoid some of the campiness that bands like Mortician (or on the other end of the spectrum Impaler or The Murderdolls) revel in. While the cheese is fine every once in a while, by employing genuinely creepy soundscapes and psychotic vocals, Necrophagia achieve a more horrific atmosphere, instead of just doing tongue-in-cheek tributes. Not ultra-technical, but I really doubt that's what these guys are going for, so what they play works. Catchy, dirty riffs, somewhat akin to a bastardized version of the neckbreakers you'd hear in a lot of thrash breakdowns towards the end of the movement. The keyboards help set them apart from a lot of their influences though. It's not pretty, it's not flashy, but it gets the job done. Recommended listening for graveyard moshing.
