Necrophobic is one of those Swedish bands who have seemingly been around since forever. Despite label problems and line-up changes they have survived for more than 15 years already and never surrendered to the obstacles forced upon them by the unpredictable world around them. After 4 years of waiting their fans can now enjoy the fruits of their new covenant with Regain Records in the form of the long awaited "Hrimthursum". The album title might falsely suggest that they have shifted musical focus towards more viking oriented extreme metal but that is not the case. One look at the title of the opening track will set you straight again. "The Slaughter Of Baby Jesus", albeit not radically thought provoking today, will still be seen as highly controversial among certain groups which should go by unmentioned in this review. As usual Necrophobic balance on a thin line between the harsh, bleak atmosphere of black metal and the brutal and technical aspects of death metal.
There is a hint implied by the album title that there might still be a certain viking metal touch to the music. That is also partly true as this is probably the most epic album Necrophobic has produced to this date but it does not intrude on the traditional sound that has earned them a solid fanbase throughout the years. There are many people who would be glad to be involved in the making of a Necrophobic album. "Hrimthursum" was mixed by Fredrik Folkare from fellow Stockholm death metallers Unleashed and the cover art was done by no other than Tyrant from Nifelheim. A powerful production (probably the best in the band's career) and well-written songs will make everyone happy to hear that one of the strongest Swedish veteran bands are back again in mint condition.
