REVIEW: Necropsy - Straight Hate Self-financed, 2003
8/10
Necropsy - Straight Hate - cover art Only four tracks that this MCD offers is not enough to enjoy them for the whole evening, but they are a good showcase on how modern brutal gore/death metal should sound. Good thing is that this material is about anger, brutality and such but is intelligent, has some intellect included in songwriting and thus is not boring at all, or cliché. The first track is really blowing away the listener with its severity, intensity and tons of energy. It has a proper balance of speed, hate but also melody, which often is a term unknown to most gore bands. So, the material reminds me of Carcass and the way they were setting standards in their beginning. Although this band is still not of that importance it is not impossible that they will be in some time, if they continue playing this kind of music. Then, on with the music, the things I really enjoyed are guitars and drums. The guitarists obviously know to play the instrument and know when to use even small ornaments in slower parts to enhance atmosphere. The riffs are straightforward and are directing the drive. This since the drums are the motor of this debut material and their speed and strength really fuels the loudspeakers all the time. The vocals are mostly brutal growl, as from the bear’s lair, and they know some screaming moments too. The production is very good for this kind of music, so no complaints.
