REVIEW: Neronoia - Un Mondo In Me Eibon Records, 2006
7/10
Neronoia - Un Mondo In Me - cover art Neronoia is an ambient act involving mainly members from the mighty Canaan. Unless a first impression could suggest we´re before the classic “side project which sounds 80% like the known source band”, the listening blows away any thought like that. It´s got some things in common, right, but it´s different. This album goes further into the ambient sounds, definitely. Did I say “ambient” in the top line? So it was, even though this is a band in a strict sense –guitars, bass, drums, vocals. I´ve followed as source the worldwide-used FNMSD (Fjordi´s Nonsense Musical Style Descriptions) handbook, that describes ambient as “any evocative and emotional music, too hazy to be categorised as any other style, often incidental and descriptive and generally scarce in complexity and instrumentation”. Leaving the world of buffoonery: Neronoia sounds quite like Canaan, especially in the delicate guitar notes, the soundscape synths and the overall feeling left in the listener after hearing the album. When it comes to the differences, one is found on vocals, much darker and whispered in comparison to Mauro´s lines in the main band; the songs are a mixture of noise ambients and vocals in a lot of moments, being in Neronoia the samples more present in all the songs. In Canaan, the shift between pure ambiental interludes and “real” songs (when the aforementioned instruments take their classic role and perform songs under well known patterns) was clear. In Neronoia both sides are intertwined and embrace often. This is music driven by keys and torn (but clean) vocals, which are the outstanding bearers of the sound. The relevance of the rest of instruments is limited and less present than on Canaan. However, the feelings the album leaves on me are somewhat similar to Canaan. Maybe this is darker and less romantic, I´d say. Could I end this review spurting the classic “recommendable for any Canaan fan”? Sure, why not? But I still prefer the original band...
