REVIEW: Neuraxis - Truth Beyond Galy Records, 2002
8/10
Neuraxis - Truth Beyond - cover art Add another band to the list of those brave souls taking a crack at finding that elusive balance between brutality, melody, technicality and simplicity. Having started out 8 years ago with only their bass player and one of the guitar players in the current line-up present, Montreal's Neuraxis boldly display their musical maturity on this 12 song release. Vocalist Ian Campbell has got ample range up front, going from Frank Mullen death grunts up to some scathing high-end moments, as in "Impulse". Musically, Neuraxis are a well-developed and highly polished machine. The dynamics of songs like "Fractioned" are but a small part of their huge arsenal, best displayed in this outing in the songs "Structures" and "Essence". Here, the band packs leagues of rhythm variations and guitar harmonies into concise bursts of sophisticated savagery. Alexandre Erian is a dexterous skinbasher, using his kit to its full potential with well-placed and thoughtfully applied blast beats . Guitarist Robin Milley joins founding member Steven Henry in a wave of harmonics for "Reflections", and works in counterpoint well throughout. Secular metaphysics seem to be the order of the day in the lyric department, which only adds to the appeal and of this great band. Good production, nice art work, full lyrics - really a great showing.
