Nevermore have not had an easy task to follow up two such
highly successful albums as "Dreaming Neon Black" and "Dead Heart In A Dead
World" but now they have finally delivered a new studio recording. The
members of the band are of course very skilled musicians who have been in the
muisic business for many years now but to me it is obvious that the most
important factor for the band's success is the vocalist Warrel Dane and his
distinctive voice. He reminds me a lot of Geoff Tate even though he does not
copy him and once again he takes the music of Nevermore to a higher level with
his gifted vocal chords. I think the reason why Nevermore have become so
popular is that they have been able to combine the complexity and intensity of
traditional metal with the vocal melodies and other elements from modern
American rock / nu-metal. By doing this they reach a wider and more varied
potential fanbase than most other bands on the scene today. I personally think
it's a little weak to produce only 40 minutes of music in three years but if
you believe in quality over quantity (which I most often do) then you will not
be disappointed. Nevermore have always had plenty of death metal riffing in
their music and this is also the case with "Enemies Of Reality" which is
perhaps their most aggressive and intense album so far. The songs are also
generally rather complex with sometimes brilliant guitarwork. Nevermore is a
band to rely on and this is definitely one of the finer releases of 2003 so
far. Stand-out tracks: "Enemies Of Reality", "I,
Voyager".
