REVIEW: Nightmare - Cosmovision Napalm Records, 2001
8/10
Nightmare - Cosmovision - cover art Nightmare began their road to success way back in 1979 but after a long period of hibernation they finally returned to the music scene in 1999. They used to be one of the most prominent French metal bands in the 80's but record company problems and musical differences led to an early break-up. The line-up is not the same as it used to be, most notable their former lead singer Jean-Marie Boix is not among us anymore since he tragically passed away in 1999. The new lead vocalist is the former drummer Jo Amore who is successfully backe up by the rest of the band members. Those of you familiar with the releases from Napalm Records will perhaps be a little surprised if you listen to this one because they don't usually sign power metal bands. This is not just any power metal band though. The vocals are very powerful, there are lots of bombastic passages and impressing choir vocals and a nice 80's metal feeling that I really like. It sounds like a mix of 80's heavy metal, modern power metal and Tristania's "Beyond The Veil" album. The latter probably depends on the fact that the album was produced by the sound wizard Terje Refsnes who has moved his well-known Sound Suite studio from Norway to France. Nightmare has returned and will not be forgotten.
