After having released two albums for Napalm Records, French veterans Nightmare have now ended up with the Swedish label Regain Records for the unearthing of their fifth studio effort "The Dominion Gate". None of these two labels are well known for their power metal releases but then again Nightmare is not like any other power metal band. Many years of hard work and gathered experience have resulted in a personal and rather characteristic sound. I will not go as far as referring to them as pioneers in any fashion because that would definitely be stretching the truth. Nightmare released their two albums for Ebony Records in the mid 80s before splitting up and not reuniting until more than ten years later. Those days of NWOBHM do however still make themselves present in their music of the 21st century, spiced up with some intricate guitar patterns here and there that make this a somewhat progressively tinged album, but above all founding member and vocalist Jo Amore aids in moving ahead of a great deal of their competition even today. He has a slightly rough-edged deep and solid voice that bring comparisons to Dio close at hand. A couple of notable guest appearances from Floor Jansen and Sander Gommans of After Forever on vocals and Ricky Marx (ex-Pretty Maids) on lead guitars deserves mentioning as well. "The Dominion Gate" is not an exceptional album but it consists of quality power metal made by a band who do not follow in the footsteps of others.
