REVIEW: Nightrage - A New Disease Is Born Lifeforce Records, 2007
8/10
Nightrage - A New Disease Is Born - cover art Nightrage has been one of those bands who just couldn't really seem to get it right with their previous release. While, yes, the past two have been good albums, they always seemed to lack something, commonly refered to as the "IT" factor. Well, the band has matured and gone through a number of changes since those days, so does this mean they found "IT"?

A New Disease Is Born is perhaps the most solid recording the band has made, and given all the line up changes since their debut, it's easy to see the new members have had an influence on the album's creation. On this release we welcome a new vocalist and guitarist, and their work is by far the best the band has ever done. The new vocals fit perfectly with the sound, and hopefully this vocalist won't be going anywhere any time soon.

The band's first single off the album, "Scathing", is only a taste of what the album holds. This isn't one of those melodic death/metalcore crossover projects, this one is just straight blistering metal from start to finish. With heavy as hell riffs and amazing drumming, the band has orchestrated the perfect sound to accompany their name. While there are moments on the CD that are just straight forward fast with a great use of double bass kicks, the album also manages to slow down sometimes to allow for some great singing, which is actually done by the band's official vocalist and not a second party (Thomas Englund sang on Sweet Vengeance instead of their vocalist at the time).

There really isn't anything bad that can be said about this release, it's a very well done and properly executed metal album that doesn't succumb to the stereotypical standards placed on it today. While there are some songs on here that have sung, melodic chorus lines, such as "Death-Like Silence", a good majority of them are screamed. The only real drawback on this CD is that there is a bit of an obvious At The Gates feel to it, but that's to be expected since a former vocalist happened to have been Thomas from ATG. Other then the sometime appearing copycat feel to it, this CD is rather impressive and a huge leap in the right direction for this band.
