REVIEW: Nightwish - Once Spinefarm Records, 2004
10/10
Nightwish - Once - cover art Here they are again. One of the most popular and most respected metal bands of our times. Although many predicted that Nightwish would never get through their second album, they managed to grow to become the most anticipated act at festivals everywhere, and one of the few who got their songs out of the underground and straight into the top spots of the charts. Their latest release is possibly the best one so far. Not changing the style but advancing music-wise, "Once" proves to be a musical masterpiece, that Nightwish created. The songs are much more powerful than on any of the previous albums and they are also a lot better written than any of the songs we were used to hearing from them. In spite of their quest for a more complicated and sophisticated sound they still managed to keep their music anchored in the style we came to know so well - some songs even reinforced with male vocals, or more melodic choruses, or beautiful passages inspired from classical music and crafted to fit the construction of such a modern sound. The usual ballads are not missing from this record as "Creek Mary's Blood", "Higher Than Hope" and "Kuolema tekee taiteilijan" come to prove, and neither does the record selling hit song ("Nemo"), but "Wish I Had An Angel", "The Siren", "Dark Chest Of Wonders", "Ghost Love Score", etc. type of songs are the ones you should be keeping your eyes on, as they are the jewels of this crown. Once again Nightwish seem to demonstrate that their skills and ideas and, most of all, determination are not to be overlooked and underestimated. In conclusion, flawless, beautiful.
