The third full studio
album from the Finnish band Nightwish was to no surprise another masterpiece
and one of the top metal releases of the year. Spinefarm Records has managed
to keep some of the best Finnish bands in the country which probably is a good
thing. Nightwish has a bombastic sound very similar to their fellow countrymen
of Children of Bodom, another great band. With a trained opera singer named
Tarja there are not many metal bands that has the capacity to compete vocally
with Nightwish but her voice can also become the band´s worst enemy. The
reason I haven´t given this album 10 out of 10 is the musical direction the
band has chosen. The best songs on this album (The Kinslayer, Wishmaster,
FantasMic and a couple more) are even better than the ones on Oceanborn but
unfortunately there are a little bit too many slow ballads on Wishmaster, an
area not really suited for the Nightwish sound. If you were to remove the
slower tracks on this album and replace them with faster ones this would
perhaps be the best metal album ever. Considering the fact that Tarja studies
church music it might be a little surprising that she would join a metal band
but I´m really glad she did! Her voice is very essential to the band, as are
the keyboard arrangements and the very nice guitar riffing. The final track
"FantasMic" is very beautiful and has a very nice flute melody à la
Rhapsody/Luca Turilli played by Esa Lehtinen. Wishmaster was produced by the
band and Tero Kinnunen. It was recorded and engineered by Tero Kinnunen at
Caverock Studios and Mikko Karmila at Finnvox Studios January-March 2000. The
cover artwork was done by Markus Mayer. Buy this
