REVIEW: Nihilist - Nihilist Threeman Recordings, 2005
9/10
Nihilist - Nihilist - cover art The CD I am about to introduce to you now represents an important era in the history of extreme music or modern music as a whole if you so wish. Nihilist was, as many of you are already well aware of, the predecessor to Entombed and existed between 1987 and 1989. In 1988 they recorded their first demo tape, "Premature Autopsy", a very mature and tight offering considering the fact that the band members were only 15 years old at the time. It is a wonderful experience to mind-travel back in time the way you are likely to do while listening to these demo tracks. Most of them are from the Nihilist years but the one and only Entombed demo, "But Life Goes On", has also been included to finish off the CD with. Being one of the most influential death metal bands ever, not only in Sweden but internationally as well, this is a release which will be embraced by a very large number of metal fans from all over the world.

Even though the sound quality is, for obvious reasons, not stellar it is a highly enjoyable album and the characteristic sound of late 80s / early 90s Swedish death metal is present all over this recording, making that peculiar sentimental feeling grab me with its claws. If you are a sane human being, that is a big fan of the early Entombed releases, then this album is a gift from hell which you will hold on to for dear life. If you were robbed you would rather hand over your wallet to the desperate mugger than your Nihilist CD. It does have one or two flaws but as anyone can tell these guys were very serious about their art even back then and it eventually paid off. As the quality of the demo material is so astonishingly high it is not merely of interest to collectors but also to fans of Entombed and death metal in general. Buy this! It is not a suggestion, it is an order so you better obey or get ready for punishment.
