REVIEW: Nile - In The Beginning Karmageddon Media, 2004
7/10
Nile - In The Beginning - cover art Nile is one of the few death metal bands of the second generation who have managed to carve themselves a niche of their own which they deserve respect for. "In The Beginning" is a compilation of their first two mini albums "Festivals Of Atonement" (1995) and "Ramses Bringer Of War" (1997) and shows the South Carolina based band's first attempts at conquering the world. Musically rooted in early brutal death metal Nile distinguished themselves early with their almost fanatic fascination for ancient Egypt, something that not only revealed itself in the lyrics but also in the music. Oriental rhythms and melodies are used more frequently in their early material than on some subsequent releases which is why these songs are of interest to every fan of innovative and creative death metal, not only hardcore fans of Nile. There is almost some kind of Therion-esque vibe here with the biggest difference being that Therion were musically a lot more heavy metal influenced even back in their death metal days. Unfortunately the death metal that Nile perform on these early recordings is not that special. Repetitive riffing is accompanied by low-key death growls that do not stand out in any way. It is competently performed but, to be honest, the only thing that make these songs interesting is the Egyptian theme and that is not enough for me to jump up and down with joy. This could have been something great but they did not have quite what it took back then to make the best of it.
