REVIEW: Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines Relapse Records, 2002
8/10
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines - cover art This is no doubt one of the most anticipated releases of 2002 for most fans of death metal. Ever since Relapse took the band under their wings Nile has been one of the most important bands on the North American extreme metal scene. They have done extensive touring, released several highly acclaimed albums and showed the world that death metal is not all about autopsies (think Carcass) and cannibalism (think Cannibal Corpse). Oriental (as in Arabic) rhythms have always worked very well with death metal for some reasons that I am ignorantly unaware of and even though this is not as apparent in the music today as it was a few years ago, Nile have nonetheless been digging deeper and deeper into the ancient mythology of Egypt. I have never been able to completely absorb the whole concept of Nile but I do appreciate their innovative lyrics. Even the mighty Morbid Angel have touched upon this subject in their lyrics ever since the very beginning but no band have to my knowledge taken it this far. Musically Nile are much more complex and intricate today then they were in their early days and this makes it harder to grasp the oriental sounds even though they are still there somewhere to be found. If you know what a "Baglama Saz" or an "Armenian Duduk" is then you will hear them both on this album. The complexity of the album does make it more difficult to discern the different elements that make up the whole but it also makes "In Their Darkened Shrines" very interesting since you will discover something new every time you listen to it. Well, perhaps not for all eternity but you can at least play it a few times and still find something new. Nile are still larger than death metal. The only thing that I have to complain about is that they have completely ripped off Candlemass' "The Well Of Souls" from their "Nightfall" album on the track "Unas, Slayer Of The Gods". Did they really not know that or did they just not care?
