REVIEW: Nocturnal Rites - Shadowland Century Media, 2002
8/10
Nocturnal Rites - Shadowland - cover art It seems to me that Nocturnal Rites are one of those bands that just keep getting better and better. The first two albums (In a Time of Blood and Fire & Tales of Mystery and Imagination) were so HORRIBLE that I just couldn't listen to them. I REALLY couldn't. The third one (The Sacred Talisman) had one or two O.K. songs, while the fourth really got my attention (Afterlife). Well, they've really done it with their latest. These guys from Sweden play power metal of the highest quality. The guitar work is very good, they came up with tons of interesting catchy tunes that you just can't help but to sing along, the guitar work is pretty good while the drumwork doesn't really stand out. The vocalist, Jonny Lindkvist, has a good voice and he knows how to use it as well, so it's a winner combination. There is something that bothers me though... If you listen to single songs you could say that this could be the best power metal album ever made, but if you take it as a whole you'll notice that the songs sound pretty much the same.. It's like they've made an album that contains three different songs. All in all, it's a good album and if you're a sucker for power metal you should check it out, you won't be disappointed. STANDOUT TRACKS: Eyes of the Dead, Invincible, Faceless God.
