REVIEW: NonExist - Deus Deceptor New Hawen Records, 2002
7/10
NonExist - Deus Deceptor - cover art NonExist consists of three young men who have made their name known to most of you who have been following the Swedish metal scene during the last couple of years. On vocals we find Johan Liiva who used to strain his vocal chords with Arch Enemy until a certain miss Gossow replaced him :-) He also happens to work at the label where they are signed. On guitars and bass we have Johan Reinholdz from the progressive metal band Andromeda. Finally on drums: Matte Modin who is also bashing skins for Dark Funeral and Defleshed. These men are apparently occupied with other things than NonExist and that is perhaps why this album lacks a little bit when it comes to song writing. There are plenty of classic Arch Enemy riffing to be enjoyed here and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the band members ability to use their instruments but it doesn't have that kind of intensity, diversity and energy that is needed to make this kind of music reach the heights where bands like Arch Enemy have taken it. This is for those of you who love technical death metal done the Swedish way and miss Johan Liiva's vocals. Three instrumental tracks clearly show that someone wants to show off his talents but unfortunately they are not that impressive. It is still enjoyable and well executed but it only lacks that little extra spark. Stand-out tracks: "Delirous Tongues", "Divided We Fall".
