REVIEW: None - Blackstar Metal Mind Records, 2003
6/10
None - Blackstar - cover art In the late 90s there was a Swedish thrash band called None (rather modest name, don't you think?) which featured musicians who are now in The Provenance and Evergrey but this younger act with the same name is from Poland. This is to my knowledge the only nu-metal band from the Eastern European countries that I've heard so far but despite the fact that they have already released three albums they don't seem to have made much of an impact outside their home country. This probably depends a lot on the fact that they are signed to a native label who have not been able to market the band properly throughout the world in the past. Now it seems like they are trying to focus more on international success though and I am sure that None will gain many new fans from all over the world. There is a problem though, nu-metal rarely mix well with other more traditional forms of metal which is what this label is mostly about. Enough said about this. "Blackstar" is professionally produced but musically there is not much that distinguishes None from other bands of their genre. Simple conventional nu-metal riffs are recycled over and over again and the songs are all very predictable in their nature. The vocalist Fajfer doesn't add much to the whole either even though he does a decent job shifting from melodic clean vocals to aggressive hardcore shouts and screams. None is not bad at all but just like many other bands in their genre they fail to make a lasting impression due to the lack of an identity of their own.
