REVIEW: Norther - Dreams Of Endless War Spinefarm Records, 2002
8/10
Norther - Dreams Of Endless War - cover art I can't really understand why Spinefarm keeps signing only bands who sound like Children Of Bodom but I guess they are scared to take chances now that they have found a winning concept. The problem is that once this wave of symphonic death metal has subsided I am afraid that the label will drop one band after the other if they aren't able to change their style. Well, back to this album. Norther is one of the newest bands to the Spinefarm family and guess what - they sound very much like Children Of Bodom but with a slightly blacker edge to them. The band was originally formed in 1996 under the name Requiem and now they have recorded their first full-length album. The first two tracks of this album are very good indeed with the usual wonderful guitarwork and sense of melody that have come to characterize most new Finnish metal bands. Norther is using keyboards almost as much as Children Of Bodom and Kalmah as a mean to make their music more bombastic and powerful. On the other hand they also rely very much on the band's highly skilled guitarists Petri Lindroos and Kristian Ranta who are doing a superb job on this album. Norther have done very well in their first work of musical art but they haven't really brought the world anything new. This is still a very good album and there is no doubt that these Finnish guys are world class musicians. The cover version of Europe's "Final Countdown" sounds pretty lousy though... Stand-out tracks: "Endless War", "Darkest Time", "Last Breath".
