REVIEW: Nothing - The Grey Subaudible Eibon Records, 2000
6/10
Nothing - The Grey Subaudible - cover art Important first statement: This is not metal, this is not hard rock, this is not hardcore, this is pure tragedy vs coldwave from the US. Metalheads do not need to worry though because I think this could very well fit your tastes as well since the atmosphere on The Grey Subaudible is dark and taken directly out of a horror movie. Think your average doom metal band but replace all the guitars with keyboards, add a symphonic touch, some noise elements and ritualistic drums. Stir for a minute or two and then add clean whispering voices with a sad sterile feeling to them. Don´t expect this to be 50 minutes of the same sound all the way through with nothing much happening because this is highly varied music with an exciting flow and musical surprises popping up on the road to that which comes to corpses. In particular I enjoy the symphonic soothing sound of this album but I can´t help feeling a little bit of resemtment towards the weird sounds that appear here and there, especially the ones on the opening track - they are frankly horrible. This album from Nothing may not be of "album of the year" quality and it is perhaps not a musical masterpiece neither but it is earcandy for the lover of symphonic keyboards. I recommend everyone to give this album a try, it might open up new musical dimensions for those who dare to endeavour to grasp the pure essence of nothingness.
