REVIEW: Novembre - Materia Peaceville Records, 2006
7.5/10
Novembre - Materia - cover art The Italian band Novembre strikes again with "Materia", their first release for the well known label Peaceville Records. Emotional songs with lots of interludes instead of death metal is the formula of "Materia", and, by the way, it is a mostly successful formula. Although the song structures are often similar to each other, "Materia" is away from being boring or repetitive. The track "Comedia" starts kicking your ass heavily in the best metal style and is my personal neck breaker candidate of the release. Vocalist Camelo Orlando does a good job on "Materia", his suffering and longing vocals fit perfectly to the songs. Sometimes he sounds a little bit restrained though. By the way, Novembre comes along with a surprise in the shape of a Duran Duran cover: "The promise" is very well done. The typical Duran Duran elements are to be heard but Novembre managed to make their own individual thing out of it. The perfect marriage of two different bands and styles. A really cool track is "Materia", the title track. Some guitars remind me of Tristitia - doomy, heavy and sad. "Nothjingrad" is a very interesting and different song. Again it starts with a sad guitar, a well dosed heavy guitar joins, fades a little bit, takes over the commando, the drums start…., just listen for yourself. Here and there, a few growls can be heard and they fit very well, like on "Croma" or on "Nothjingrad" – a remembrance of the death/doom times. Standout tracks: "Aquamarine", "Comedia", "The Promise", "Materia", "Nothijngrad".
