REVIEW: Nuclear Assault - Third World Genocide Steamhammer Records, 2005
6/10
Nuclear Assault - Third World Genocide - cover art Among the masses of recent reunions of 80s metal bands we can find New York proto thrashers Nuclear Assault, led by bassist and former Anthrax ally Dan Lilker. From the mid 80s line-up frontman John Connelly (also ex-Anthrax) and drummer Glenn Evans also remain. The music of the East Coast natives has always been accompanied by lyrics where a sense of humour and social awareness share the space. Musically and when it comes to the production aspect this album is rooted in the primitive crossover thrash / punk scene of the mid to late 80s. It is built around simple straight-forward riffs and standard drumming and there is very little the brain finds worth storing. Once in a while the old-school riffing calls for serious headbanging but overall "Third World Genocide" fails to live up to the expectations you must have on a reunion of a respected band such as Nuclear Assault. It's not a complete disaster but when trying to achieve success based on an old-school concept you need to pick the best from the past. There is some nice guitar work here and there but when the highlights are the song titles (yes, the titles, not the songs) "Whine And Cheese" and "Long Haired Asshole" it says it all, doesn't it?
