Switzerland stands for: cows, banks, chocolate, Heidi and Tom G. Warrior´s incredible witchy nose. To the benefit of all I haven´t mentioned Roger Federer (Marc Rosset ruled, hahaha!!!) or slim Borussia striker Mr. Chapuisat. Leaving aside awful jokes capable to make a tree puke, let´s start these bunch of lines saying Nucleus Torn are, oh, by chance, from that tiny rocky country. I´ve read the promo sheet and it told me nothing consistent about this band´s style so I was more curious than usual and I had to put the CD on the stereo to make up my mind. Yes, it´s hard to convey to words the brand of music played by this band. Each song seems absolutely different from the rest, in a certain way; the amalgam of sounds is excessive, until the point you don´t know exactly where these guys are going to. It´s not about mixing black, death, doom, folk, ambient, industrial, etc. in each track; you can rather find an ambient song next to a prog rock tune. You hear vocals inspired by Sigur Rós lamentations and other songs are the canvas to a girl´s lovely voice. Sigur Rós, The Third And The Mortal, Dark Suns, Opeth (of course!) and even The Moon And The Nightspirit have visited me while hearing “Torn”. Some Maudlin Of The Well overall focus (not style) can be heard, too. A focus consisting of a... lack of focus? Well, that dreamy eerie weird atmosphere... you know... do you know? I don´t know if you know...
Being this album mostly tranquil, the metal element is scarce and variety rules the land. There´s something behind all the mass, something which must be nurtured and cherished through time and dedication, in order to reach a defined shape. However, we´re not before a simple promise; one can perceive a charming essence in Nucleus Torn´s music. By the way, quite strange is the fact this album is shorter than expected; the majority of bands willing to be avantgarde usually put all their pretentious, sonic ejaculations into the CD and pull several yawns off our mouths through their tiny 60 or 70 minutes. Fortunately Nucleus torn are mature and sensible enough to avoid these cliches; these songs flow easily into the ear, enjoyable and delicate, fresh and sensitive.
Band´s factotum Fredy Schnyder has planned to release four albums to draw the whole concept, to be called “Knell” and “Andromeda Waiting (parts I & II)”. Anticipation? Let´s see what´s behind these days... This man has envisioned something, that´s sure!
