REVIEW: OSI - Free InsideOut Music, 2006
8/10
OSI - Free - cover art OSI, the high profile collaboration between progressive metal veterans Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) and Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, ex-Dream Theater), return with their sophomore effort "Free". Further exploring their own visions of what progressive music should sound like, they delve deeper into the genre than most of their competition, carving their own characteristic figure and letting no rules or regulations stand in their way of creating music for the body, the soul and the mind. There is both thought and passion behind this collection of songs, ranging in mood from the heavy riffs of "Free" to the calm melancholy of the Gary Numan influenced "Go", the latter probably the best song of the entire album. While the song writing and creation of the album is to be credited to the duo of Matheos and Moore, they have recruited Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) on drums and Joey Vera (Fates Warning) on bass for the recording sessions this time, resulting in. Balancing between technical details, psychedelic ambiance and more straight-forward heavy rock riffs, the second OSI album is an intrigueing experience that leaves me wanting even more in the end. Recommended for every fan of progressive rock.
