REVIEW: Obsessed, the - Lunar Womb Meteor City Records, 2006
9/10
Obsessed, the - Lunar Womb - cover art The Obsessed are one of those few underground bands out there that have pretty much achieved universal respect in the rock/metal community amongst fans, other musicians, and critics alike. You are gonna be hard pressed to find anyone who has anything bad to say about these guys and there is a good reason for that. For one thing there is a certain legacy to them as they are the original band of legendary guitarist Scott “Wino” Weinrich, While heavily influenced by the doom of Black Sabbath, The Obsessed combine crushing riffs with a hard rock attitude to create a sonic experience which is truly all their own. Of course their sound itself centers around the incredible talent that is Wino, with his dazzling lead guitar playing. And quite possibly, on no album in The Obsessed discography are his talents more on display than on Lunar Womb. While out of print for a long while, Meteor City records finally re-released Lunar Womb in 2006 much to the satisfaction of fans and critics, but most notably collectors, everywhere. Originally released in 1991 this is actually the 2nd full length recording from the band whose roots you can trace all the way back to the late 70s under the moniker Warhorse.

Musically speaking the record sounds as fresh today as it did back in 91 (not that I can even really remember that far back) While Wino’s guitar playing can be called nothing short of mesmerizing, it is quite important not to underestimate the man’s singing abilities. Maybe not the most technically gifted but his calm/cool delivery works perfectly giving the impression that he is singing on queue rather than reciting lyrics. Songs such as the doomy “Hiding Mask”, the punkish anthem “No Blame”, and the powerful title track just reek of epicness and are showcases for what The Obsessed and Wino are all about. There is no getting around the fact that Lunar Womb is a vital album; perhaps just for it’s historical aspect alone as this may be the creative pinnacle of a highly influential underground bound. Yet judging not on historical merits but just the music itself, it is confirmed that this slab of doom, released some 15 or so years ago, still holds up today and is most worthy of your time. It was also after this release that The Obsessed went on to secure a record deal with Columbia records, but that is another chapter for another day…
