Now that the female vocalist Rachel has left Occult for the death metal colleagues Sinister after having to choose between the two bands they can no longer take advantage of having a beautiful girl behind the microphone. Instead they have to rely solely on the music but judging from their new album "Elegy For The Weak" this will not be a problem for the Dutch thrash metal veterans. With a blackened edge and at a furious pace Occult thrashes for fourty minutes until the grip on you is finally loosened. This is one of the best produced metal albums I have heard so far this year and it lets the band's music come to life in a perfect way. It punches you straight in the face from track one and there is so much adrenalin in here that it's enough for an entire hockey team. This is actually one of the few new albums where I have been impressed with everything from the music to the lyrics. The band is tighter than the noose around a hung men's neck and the vocalist Maurice Swinkels is in my opinion one of the best vocalists in extreme metal today as he roars his guts out without many moments of well-deserved rest. The lyrics are wonderfully horrific and written by a master of words. Tales of murder, human slaughter and meaningless violence accompany the music and Maurice tells these tales in a very elegant manner. A solid fifth album from the band that should please those of you who think you would enjoy modern death / thrash metal painted in black.
