Oceans Of Sadness is
apparently one of the the most popular metal bands from Belgium together with
Ancient Rites who have received a lot of attention lately. The band formed in
1995 and already in 1996 they recorded their first demo which was selected as
demo of the month by the respected Dutch Aardschok magazine. Last year The LSP
Company (a label rising out of the ashes of Shiver Records) released their
debut album and now they are ready to unleash their second opus. Opus is the
correct word to use in this case because these ten songs last for close to 70
minutes altogether. Oceans Of Sadness is a band whose sound is hard to grasp
completely. Sometimes they sound like a melodic death metal band, sometimes
like Old Man's Child just to end off with piano melodies and atmospheric
Opeth moments. Even though they have incorporated the sounds of many of the
most popular genres of today's metal scene they still have some things that
they need to work on further if they want to reach the top. The first half of
the album, material enough for a normal full-length album these days, is very
good indeed with nice melodic yet aggressive metal with a contrasting mix of
brutality and atmosphere. In the end it feels a little stagnant and uninspired
though and the vocals are not always satisfactory. If you are into atmospheric
and emotional black, death or gothic metal and willing to take a chance then
this is an album worth looking
into.
