Odyssea is a new name to remember for all of you who have fallen in love with the Italian power metal scene. The band is led by the new Labyrinth guitarist Pier Gonella and musically they also have a lot in common with Labyrinth. However, there are some moments when Odyssea remind me more of the German power metal band Freedom Call than most of their Italian colleagues, especially when it comes to their use of keyboards and choruses. It is upbeat, generally fast, lofty and melodic metal. I wouldn't want to go as far as their label and say that this is "something really different that will surprise a lot of metalheads" because it most definitely will not but Odyssea do nonetheless display both song writing skills and instrumental talent on this debut album. Most of the solos might as well have been left out in my opinion because they add nothing to the overall appearance of the album. Odyssea are off to a good start and despite the awful choice of cover artwork, they are well worth checking out for all fans of power metal, especially of the Italian brand. Favorite picks: "Fly", where Labyrinth singer Rob Tiranti makes a successful guest appearance, and "Falling Star" with a powerful driving guitar riff and nice contrasts.
