REVIEW: Of The Wand And The Moon - Midnight Will Heiđrunar Myrkrunar, 2005
8/10
Of The Wand And The Moon - Midnight Will - cover art In my hands, this re-release of the 2000 10” by this Danish act whose evocative name is Of The Wand And The Moon. In my ears, its pleasant notes. Music that literally compels you to sit back and relax, experiencing visions as long as the songs keep sounding. Nevermind if you call this project neo-folk, folk noir or ambient. My humble words will try to depict the music played by Kim Larsen, the man behind the whole thing. There´s a variation between acoustic passages conducted by the voice and guitar of Herr Larsen, and restless fragments of ambient music based on keyboards. OTWATM is well known by the whispers floating along the mellow guitar strumming (something quite present on this recording), one of the trademarks, if not the most prominent one; but when the keys come to the fore another side of the soul is unveiled. No Mortiis repetitive patterns here, the focus is rather different, nightly ambiences woven with taste is what the listener is going to find.

The opening theme “Midnight Will” nails to your brain with silky claws, mesmerizing and hypnotic; the music of OTWATM is pretty simple and minimalistic if you really like that word, but effective. Other instruments as accordion are used here to adorn the body of the songs. The electric guitar in “Brace Yourself” (sort of a reprise of the title track, contributing to the leit motiv of the miniCD) gets the background strong and solemn, for example. However, most of the tracks here are accoustic guitar driven, and classic folk chords rule the land without using accoustic guitar riffs the way other bands as Forseti or Tenhi do. Vocals are mostly tranquil murmurs that fit perfectly with the immense feeling of melancholy and calmness conveyed by guitars. This miniCD is a good token of the band´s musical vision. OTWATM will settle your thoughts into relaxing atmospheres.
