I´ve been quite surprised by this band, really. In the beginning I expected another My Dying Bride clone, according to some reviews I read here and there, but fortunately I ended up enjoying this album and I think it certainly deserves attention. Despite the influence from Aaron & co. it's something very hard to avoid in these times if you own a doom metal band. Officium Triste manage to create a very correct album that is far away from being a cheap impersonation of the British doomsters, nor any other classic band. “Reason” is a very enjoyable doom metal album that is mainly strengthened by the particular sound of guitars and the very good melodies they create; this is something the band have really worked a lot on, and the trait that distinguishes this album from many forgettable melancholic metal bands that annoy us from time to time. As I say, the harmonies and sound of guitars are clean and melodic, riding between heavy rhythm chords and tasteful notes that weave convincing landscapes. There is no violin, clean voices nor chick singing. Pim´s voice is guttural, the death-doom type, and the keyboards bestow the proper ambience to support the music, though in some moments they are the main character. Lyrics are not the “ultra twisted bizarre metaphores that only the writer understands” kind; just the opposite, Pim seems to be fond of the nude verses that express what he´s feeling when writing those lines. A question of tastes, maybe a little too simple and straight-forward for me, but at least they are easy to understand. Some Shape of Despair touches can be found here, too, but Officium Triste are less linear, not as eerie and dreamy. However, don´t be mistaken: the main tempo is slow, as doom metal is meant to be. A really good album.
