REVIEW: Old Man's Child - Slaves Of The World Century Media, 2009
7.5/10
Old Man's Child - Slaves Of The World - cover art Call 'em little Dimmu Borgir if you like, or maybe Dimmu Jr., but Old Man's Child have hit pay dirt for the first time since 1997's The Pagan Prosperity. Dimmu Borgir's Galder (a.k.a Thomas Rune Andersen) has been working on  Old Man's Child since 1993. In reality, Dimmu is his side project, but over the years, though he put out albums under the Old Man's Child name, most of his attention and his good 'stuff' went to Dimmu.

This time around he put a lot of effort into the song writing for Slaves of The World, and the end result is an epic Norwegian Metal album, slickly produced and atmospheric, just like his other band.

Old Man's Child is, for all practical intents and purposes, a one man gig with Galder handling all vocals, guitars, bass, and keyboards.  Peter Wildoer (Darkane, Arch Enemy, Pestilence) bangs the drums this time around and does a fine job working with Galder, blending together perfectly, tightly designed riffs and beats, and very brutal. Check out tunes like "Unholy Foreign Crusade" and "Ferden Mot Fiendens Land" and dig those patterns yourself.

Similar to Dimmu with all the grand-scaled keyboards and orchestration, ultimately Galder's main focus seems to be his guitar work, not all the mood setting of his other project. He's not doing anything out of the ordinary for Norwegian Black Metal fare, but he is quite intricate and displays some nice hand picking solos in between some eye gouging riffs.

It's possible that this is the record which shows that Old Man's Child is a bit more than a two bit Dimmu Borgir knock off. Galder has at least given himself an opportunity to prove he just may be a creative genius.
