There is nothing ground breaking or shocking here, just some very competent Symphonic Black Metal from Old Man's Child, which is Galder on everything but drums. Reno Killerich, formerly of Dimmu Borgir, Vile, and Exmortem, among undoubtedly other bands, executes the drumming with maniacal skill and the madness continues. Though Galder has been a full time member of Dimmu Borgir since 2000, OMC sounds less like DB than say, a more lush and polished Satyricon with a greater Thrash pedigree. OMC's Vermin invokes Ninnuam's marvelous debut record, though with less grandeur and unleashed with fewer participating parties (i.e., not as many contributors). Of note on this release is Eric Peterson of Testament fame and Dragonlord notoriety. He plays guitar on "In Torment's Orbit," a song which opens with a lick sounding like it was plainly lifted from Peterson's main band's 1995 release, Demonic. Production on Vermin is potent and crystal clear, courtesy of the infamous Studio Fredman. If you can't get enough Symphonic Black Metal, definitely support the scene, Century Media, and Galder. Old Man's Child is a great studio project worthy of quite a few listens, even if it ain't the most original thing to come out these days. In a few words: cold and calculated. Fans of Dimmu Borgir ought to consume this with a swiftness.
