REVIEW: On Broken Wings - Its All A Long Goodbye Alveran Records, 2005
7/10
On Broken Wings - Its All A Long Goodbye - cover art The album bearing the uplifting and positively charged title "It's All A Long Goodbye" is the sophomore effort of Boston's mosh metallers On Broken Wings, following up the well received debut, and equally joyful, "Some Of Us May Never See The World". While this album does in fact feature a couple of remastered songs from their debut ("Listless" and "I Do My Crosswords In Pen") the rest of the tracks are all fresh new material. Not unlike other metalcore bands On Broken Wings mix sharp aggressive riffs with equal parts melancholy and groovy breakdowns. The world is not a happy place where the sun shines on smiling faces, the reality is a cold, harsh and shapeless concrete wall where death and despair rule without mercy. On broken wings the suburban children do not learn to fly from their nests, they are smashed to pieces, body and soul, when they fall to the ground, deprived of the hope of a better future to arrive. This is their soundtrack, their musical salvation. On Broken Wings do not entirely lack creative visions but they do not reach far beyond standard concepts. The vocals are however unusually well done and varied, ranging from death grunts to angst-ridden metalcore vocals and a few attempts at clean singing which are not exceptionally successful. A good solid metalcore release.
