REVIEW: Onward - Evermoving Century Media, 2001
8/10
Onward - Evermoving - cover art Onward was founded by guitarist Toby Knapp, previously a solo artist on Shrapnel Records and interviewed in Guitar World Magazine at the age of 18. Their debut album was set for release on Sentinel Steel Records but Century Media bought them out and signed them to a multi-album deal. Therefore the release of this debut album came a little late and the second album from the band will be released later this year as well. What Knapp has created is a band of the new power metal generation - a mix between the European and the American style. There are bombastic drums as well as sharp, heavy guitar riffs on this album and most important of all the vocals are among the best I´ve heard from a power metal band in a long time. Michael Grant (who also has released a solo album on Sentinel Steel Records) brings out the best of every song with his emotional voice and melodies. The music is a mix of traditional power metal elements from both sides of the Atlantic performed by some very talented musicians but it is still the varied vocals from Grant that make Onward a band above the rest. Perhaps there are a little too many shrieking guitar solos but this debut release from Onward is definitely worth listening to whether you are a power metal fan or not. It will be very interesting to see what they can achieve with their second album. It might be hard to top this one but we´ll see...
