When Onward released their debut album last
year I was sure that this would become one of the my favorite bands on the
power metal scene and I seemed to be correct in my analysis. This album was
originally meant to be released late last year as well since the band had
already finished all the material but for some reason the release date has
been delayed until March 25th 2002 (which is today). While the debut album was
a very good album the band have now produced a nothing but amazing follow-up
that will push them further ahead of most of the competition. There are two
things that make Onward one of the best American metal bands at the moment.
First of all there is a man called Toby Knapp who used to be a Shrapnel
recording artist. He is an extremely talented guitarist and without his
wonderful mix of technique, beautiful melodies and heavy riffs Onward would
not have become what they are today. The second and perhaps most notable
strength of the band is the vocalist Michael Grant who always gives us a very
intense performance. He has also released a solo album through Sentinel Steel
Records, the label that first signed the band before Century Media discovered
them. This album shows a band that has grown together since the debut release.
The song structures are more complex and thought out with a stronger content.
Onward is one of the leading American metal bands at the moment and unlike
many European colleagues their music never gets cheesy and very rarely boring.
Stand out tracks: "Reawaken", "Night", "The Next
Triumph".
