REVIEW: Opeth - Blackwater Park Music For Nations, 2001
8/10
Opeth - Blackwater Park - cover art Opeth has now completed a full poker hand with their fifth full-length album. The Swedish death metal scene has over the years become one of the most diverse and unique in the world with legendary bands such as At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Therion and Tiamat evolving in as many different directions. Opeth is without a doubt one of the leading bands in this league and they have also managed to create a unique progressive sound with a jazz fusion touch to it that can not be heard from any other band. Opeth keywords has all the way been emotions, beauty and sadness. You will find no political strikes in their lyrics, this is purely on the personal level, dealing with the emotional life within the skin. Aside from this Opeth is foremost a death metal with Mikael Åkerfeldt as one of the best growlers in the world. The characteristics of Opeth are still here, including acoustic interludes, clean emotional vocal parts and chaotic ever-changing guitar riffing. Still it feels like something is missing on this album. Having followed the development of Opeth over their four previous releases I was hoping for something more than this. I don´t know if it´s the production or if Mikael has changed his vocal style slightly because I feel like some of the strong emotional edge is gone. A very good album but I do hope for more next time. Within a year two of my favorite bands has disappointed me: Theatre Of Tragedy and Opeth. Towards what black hole is the world heading :-)
