REVIEW: Opeth - Morningrise Candlelight Records, 1996
9/10
Opeth - Morningrise - cover art Ever since I first heard my first Opeth song "To Bid You Farewell" (which happens to be on this album) they have been among my favorite bands and therefore this review is likely to become slightly subjective but I assure you that Opeth is one of the best bands in Sweden at the moment. If you haven´t heard the band before I can tell you that they play melodic death metal like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity but with more progressive elements and lots of different riffs in every. There are also many acoustic interludes in the songs with very nice clean vocals similar to late Katatonia. Mikael Åkerfeldt is one of the finest metal vocalists in Sweden today. The lyrics are emotional as are the music, telling woeful stories of broken hearts and wounded love. Opeth always wants to squeeze in as much music as possible into every song and hence the songs tend to be very long. The fourth track on this album is about 20 minutes long! That song and parts of the others were originally supposed to end up on their debut album "Orchid". The bonus track "Eternal Soul Torture" is a rare rehearsal track from 1992 that is not really bad but the sound quality could have been better. If you like emotional melodic metal and don´t mind some growling this is an album for you. "Moringrise" was recorded in March 1996 at Unisound Recordings, produced by Opeth and engineered by the legendary Dan Swanö.
